SUMMARY:Online Short Row Sampler: Introduction to 5 Different Short Row Methods
DESCRIPTION:Short rows are what happen when you turn your knitting and go back in the other direction before finishing a row\, or while knitting in rounds.  Short rows add extra fabric where the extra rows are made\, shaping it without increases\, decreases\, or bind-offs.  They can add a three-dimensional aspect to knitting.  Common examples include sock heels and bust darts  We’ll start with the  most basic garter stitch short rows\, then move on to different short row methods vary based on how the holes from the turns are hidden. \nIn this class\, we will make a circular piece of fabric (pattern free with registration)\, based on the Petal Dishcloth\, that can be used as a hot mat or dishcloth\, depending on what yarn you use.  We will try at least 5 different short row methods\, including Wrap & Turn\, Japanese\, German\, Yarn Over\, and Shadow Wrap\, as we create the wedges of the circle. \nPlease note that clicking the button below will take you to the Yarn and Soul website to check out.

DESCRIPTION:You will learn the necessary skills to seam your sweaters beautifully: blocking\, mattress stitch\, and working in ends. You will also learn tips to use in knitting your sweaters that will make finishing easier.  As time permits\, we will discuss setting in sleeves and picking up and knitting button bands and collars.  Bring three approximately 4 x 4” worsted weight swatches knit in plain stockinette (knit one row\, purl one row) and two knit in garter stitch (knit every row) to practice techniques on.  If you have a sweater that needs finishing\, bring that too.  In addition to the swatches and extra yarn\, bring a yarn needle and something to hold your pieces together: safety pins\, plastic yarn pins\, locking stitch markers\, or small hair clips. \n

SUMMARY:Knitting Style Sampler Class--1/28
DESCRIPTION:There are many different ways to hold knitting needles and manage the working yarn.  Knitters often find that one or another method is more comfortable or that they like to switch off.  Switching between methods can help avoid fatigue and discomfort.  In this class you will have the chance to try continental\, English (throwing)\, lever\, pencil and Portuguese knitting.  The first half will focus on introducing several styles of knitting.  Students will choose one or two methods they would like to practice. We will try different ways of holding the yarn and have the opportunity to use knitting needles made with different materials. \nIn the second half we’ll review and work on improving the students’ chosen style(s).  Students will then have a chance to try two-color knitting with one color in each hand.

While they rip out a lot\, they also know how to fix smaller mistakes without having to. In this class you will learn how to fix a dropped stitch\, mistakes in lace\, texture\, and cabled patterns\, and to place lifelines. We’ll learn some techniques for dealing with mistakes that occur too far back for a simple fix. DESCRIPTION:This Zoom class will help you prepare to knit a sweater (whether your first\, or 20th) as part of a broadly defined sweater Knit-a-Long at Moss Brook Fiber Arts.  We will discuss how much ease to add for a sweater (and therefore\, which size to knit)\, how to choose a substitute yarn\, how to knit a sweater to make finishing easier\, and basic ways to adjust a pattern. Have ready some or all of the following: a favorite sweater that you love the fit of\, a pattern you would like to knit\, a yarn if you’ve chosen it (with ball band information)\, a blocked swatch (measure it before you block it)\, a notebook or device to record decisions and progress\, and a tape measure.  We can share information on patterns ahead of time for those who have decided what they want to knit. \n

DESCRIPTION:In this group Zoom class you will learn to do two color knitting while creating a stranded colorwork hat\, using the hat pattern I will provide. You will learn to read a chart\, maintain tension\, keep colors consistent on the back\, and more. \nI will e-mail a link for the class the day before.  I have my iPad set up on a stand so that I can show you how to do things in real time.  If we haven’t corresponded recently\, I’ll send you a confirmation e-mail when you sign up\, to be sure I have your correct e-mail address. \nMaterials: Have three different colors of contrasting worsted weight yarn that go together well.  (This will be approximately 50 g of the main color  and 25 and 10 g of contrasting colors.)  Have appropriate needles for working the yarn: 16” circular or needles for your preferred method of circular knitting. \nHomework: You will cast on and knit circularly in 1 x 1 or 2 x 2 ribbing for 1¼ inches (3 or 4 and more yarn if you want to turn it up) on needles one size smaller than those you will use in the class  (CO numbers coming soon). \nThis class is currently full.  Please email me at edith@mossbrookfiberarts.com if you would like to be put on the waiting list.
